Why We're Standing Up for Democracy This September 15th
Each year, millions of Americans miss their chance to vote for one simple reason: they were never registered in the first place! National Voter Registration Day, coming up on September 15, 2026, exists to close that gap; and this year, the Alliance Center is proud to support civic engagement.
A Long-Standing Commitment
Supporting civic participation isn't new for us at the Alliance, it's part of who we are. We believe that access to the ballot box is foundational to a healthy community, and for years we've woven civic engagement into the fabric of our work. Because we know that when more people have a voice in our government, everyone benefits.
This year, we're deepening that commitment by joining the Community Spaces Network's (CSN) 2026 Healthy Democracy Civic Spaces Initiative — becoming a Healthy Democratic Civic Space ourselves.
CSN is a peer-driven network of nonprofit shared-space operators and community leaders working to strengthen social-purpose HUBs across North America. Their research is clear on why this matters: the people most likely to be unregistered to vote are often already walking through the doors of nonprofit centers like ours every day. And national polling backs it up too, roughly 8 in 10 Americans believe nonprofits should be helping people register to vote.
CSN's Healthy Democracy Civic Spaces Initiative gives community centers like ours a simple, nonpartisan framework (along with the tools and materials) to turn the trust and foot traffic we already have into civic action. It was an easy "yes."
What It Means to Be a Healthy Democratic Civic Space
Being designated a Healthy Democratic Civic Space means we've made a formal, nonpartisan commitment to help our community participate in democracy; not by telling anyone how to vote, but by making sure everyone can. In practice, that means:
Signage throughout our space to help visitors quickly check their voter registration status and find their polling place
Nonpartisan information on registration deadlines, early voting, and absentee options
Support for partner-led efforts across the community, including a National Voter Registration Day activation happening across Denver
Hosting partner events on nonpartisan election support and civic participation: Join us September 24th for our Election Protection Training and learn practical steps and volunteer opportunities to help elections run smoothly and accessibly in your community
A standing commitment to treat every visitor equally, regardless of party or political viewpoint
